Skoler, Abbott & Presser, P.C., the leading labor and employment law firm serving employers in the greater Springfield area, today announced that Partner Susan G. Fentin and Associate John Gannon will be leading a master class on advanced skills for managing requested time off from work for human resource managers. Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations will remain one of the most challenging hurdles for human resource departments to overcome this year. The good news is that this master class will help employers and human resource professionals master management responsibilities to avoid costly litigation penalties.
This intensive day-long workshop will provide employers and human resource managers with the right tools and information to maneuver intermittent leave, employee performance and other relevant and engaging topics. The rigorous course will also qualify human resource professionals for up to 6.25 recertification credit hours through the HR Certification Institute.
The workshop will cover such topics as:
- The latest FMLA revisions and what recent FMLA court decisions mean and how employers can adjust their policies accordingly
- How to manage intermittent leave and reduce abuse and fraud
- How to judge a serious health condition and eliminate disputes about what does and does not qualify
- How FMLA and other state workers’ compensation laws overlap and the best practices to use to avoid violations
“Last year’s event was highly successful,” said Attorney Susan G. Fentin. “During the presentation, we will review fundamental FMLA compliance guidelines and walk participants through solutions to the challenges faced day in and day out. The subject matter will teach employee management essentials while also instilling confidence in human resource managers and employers.”
Attorney Fentin graduated magna cum laude from Western New England University School of Law in 1996, where she was editor-in-chief of The Western New England College Law Review. She has been selected to the Super Lawyer’s list since 2008, and since 2010, she has been named one of the top labor and employment attorneys in Massachusetts by the prestigious Chambers and Partners rating organization. In 2015, she was named one of the Top Women of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. A resident of Conway, Attorney Fentin joined Skoler, Abbott and Presser, P.C., in 1999 after practicing for several years with the Labor and Employment department of a large Hartford law firm; she was made a partner of the firm in 2004.
Attorney John Gannon, a resident of Longmeadow, has defended employers against claims of discrimination, retaliation, harassment, wrongful termination claims, as well as actions arising under the Family Medical Leave Act and wage and hour law. He also has experience with lawsuits seeking to enforce restrictive covenants and protect trade secrets. Attorney Gannon frequently assists employers in litigation avoidance strategies. He regularly counsels employers on compliance with state and federal laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act. Attorney Gannon is a regular contributor to business publications and to the Massachusetts Employment Law Letter.
